Active Aging Week
September 21, 2018Are you ready for Active Aging Week? Each year, the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) joins those 50 and older in celebrating Active Aging Week. This week focuses on stomping out the stigma around aging and encouraging those who are older to get out and be proud of their active lifestyles. Many people believe aging means slowing down. This week is intended to promote the vibrancy found in remaining active as we age, and The Oaks at Denville has many activities planned around these themes for residents to learn from and enjoy.
Active Aging Week Activities at The Oaks at Denville
Those who call The Oaks at Denville home benefit from our award-winning LivWell program. LivWell is so much more than your typical senior living activities program. We go beyond bingo and board games to provide you with the opportunity to engage in experiences that support a high quality of life, personal choice, lifelong development and an optimal sense of well-being. The LivWell program focuses on the seven dimensions of wellness, which are all equally important to leading a robust life. This week, we’ve got an array of activities to help you develop these seven dimensions of health which include:
Physical
Through physical exercise, we improve our body’s ability to function as we age. Take part in activities meant to get you up and moving and your heart pumping.
Intellectual
Challenge your cognitive health through learning a new skill or engaging your mind in learning a new game. Keeping our minds active not only encourages growth, it helps decrease your risk for conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Emotional
Boost your mood by inviting friends to join you in activities throughout the week. Not only will you enjoy your time more, you’ll improve your emotional health through spending time with the people you love.
Environmental
Our environment has a lot to do with our overall health. Learn the ins and outs of what it means to be a good steward of the planet we call home.
Spiritual
Your spiritual health, no matter what you believe, is important to us. Take a walk on one of our trails to reflect or spend time meditating. You’ll be happy you took the time to do a little soul-searching this week.
Vocational
You spent years building a knowledge base in your career field. Now is a great time to share that knowledge with those around you. Engage in conversations about your vocational ventures to improve your intellectual health and help others learn from your knowledge.
Social
We encourage you to participate in Active Aging Week activities that combine physical activities and spending time with others. Sign up for a fitness class or take a walk with a friend; remaining socially connected as we age has been proven to have a positive impact on our overall health.
Lifelong Wellness the Whole Year Through
At The Oaks at Denville, we make sure our residents enjoy whole-person, lifelong wellness throughout the entire year, not just during Active Aging Week. For instance, August we celebrated “Wellness Around the World.” Our residents virtually “traveled” around the world, learning and experiencing the cultures of countries where people live the happiest, longest lives.
An example of a favorite Wellness Around the World activity: Residents enjoyed getting the chance to learn the ancient practice of Kendo, a traditional Japanese martial art that uses bamboo swords and protective armor. It’s our goal to continue to provide these types of engaging activities year-round, to ensure residents are living the engaging lives they deserve.
