The Oaks at Denville Earns the Platinum SAGECare LGBTQ+ Aging Cultural Competency Credential
November 16, 2022The Oaks at Denville remains committed to prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, including the support and care of LGBTQ+ older adults. To underscore this commitment, we made it a priority to receive formal training from SAGECare to learn how to better connect and care for the LGBTQ+ aging community and to comply with New Jersey’s LGBTQI+ Senior Bill of Rights.
The Platinum SAGECare LGBTQ+ Aging Cultural Competency Credential reflects The Oaks at Denville’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for every individual.
As part of the SAGECare training, The Oaks team members received an overview on the various rights and protections extended to LGBTQ+ older adults. They also gained access to local and national resources which provide best practices for creating communities welcoming to LGBTQ+ older adults, their loved ones, and their caregivers. Case studies and videos of real individuals were reviewed by The Oaks staff to give them a better understanding why some LGBTQ+ older adults may choose not to come out. Our team members will use this training to identify and combat the legal, social, and medical challenges faced by our LGBTQ+ aging community. The Oaks will continue its commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for every individual.
SAGECare is a division of SAGE, the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ older adults. SAGECare provides LGBTQ+ competency training and consulting on LGBTQ+ aging issues to service providers.
