Why Where You Retire Matters

Why the Community Where You Retire Matters

It’s a proven fact: people who prioritize social interactions lead to happier, healthier lives. The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California Berkley researched how social connections keep seniors happy and found people who are highly engaged in social activity have 43 percent less disability than those who are not, and experience about half the rate of cognitive decline.

Considering the significance of an active social life, especially as we age, one of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) is ensuring that engaging and enriching activities are available for overall health and well-being.

For Tom and Libby Vona, the decision of where to move was easy. The Oaks at Denville offered a sense of community they were looking for, and the number of activities and social events available solidified their choice. “You can be as busy as you like if that is your desire, or you can just relax,” the couple notes. Both decided to take advantage of the CCRC’s various activities, with Tom joining the Chorus of The Oaks after not having sung for 50 years, and Libby enjoying the exercise classes and showing off her multilingual talents in the community’s Spanish Club.

Activities for Everyone at The Oaks at Denville

The Oaks at Denville offers daily, weekly and monthly activities – plenty of opportunities for residents to find what they love and get involved. Large groups get together for scheduled card games, and neighbors are always willing to pick up a deck and play in their free time. Happy hour is a must at The Oaks, where residents are able to relax over a glass of wine and discuss anything on their minds. Movies are often played, lecture series are available for those that are open to new cultural experiences, and the list goes on.

If you have a passion that’s not already reflected in the list of activities, there’s no need to worry, shared Tom and Libby. “There are activities for everyone, and if something doesn’t exist, you can start it yourself.” A testament that there truly is something to do for everyone at The Oaks.

When walking around, it’s apparent that having a tight-knit community is important to residents. Groups of friends are always out and about, whether it be knitting, reading, solving puzzles – anything to be involved. Family and friends are clearly a vital part of everyday lives.
